Samsung Electronics is a South Korean consumer electronics corporation. It represents a primary competitor of the iPhone.
Samsung is known for being a supplier of various hardware components to Apple, including LCD and AMOLED displays, DRAM, and flash memory.
Between 2006 (with iPod nano (2nd generation)) and 2014 (with A7), Samsung were the primary (usually sole) supplier of systems-on-a-chip for iPod, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, cooperating to design and produce S5L-based products to Apple's requirements. With the release of A8, Apple began switching to more custom silicon designed and produced in cooperation with TSMC. The final major silicon produced by Samsung was A9, which was dual-sourced from both Samsung (as S8000) and TSMC (as S8003).
The Lightning AV Adapters, which make use of the S5L8747 SoC, are the only remaining Samsung S5L-based products still on sale and supported.
