The Touch Bar is a horizontal touchscreen strip featured on MacBook Pro models from 2016 to 2022. It replaces the traditional function keys on a laptop keyboard with dynamic access to global and context-specific actions. It was first introduced at the 'Hello again.' event on 27 October 2016, and released with the MacBook Pro (2016) models, with the exception of the base "13-inch (Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)" model.
In its "second generation", released with the MacBook Pro (2019, Magic Keyboard), the display width is reduced to accommodate a physical Escape key, addressing a frequent complaint with the feature.
It was removed from the 14-inch and 16-inch models in 2021, yet it remained in the product lineup for some time through the MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020). With the release of the base MacBook Pro (14-inch, Nov 2023) model, the feature was fully retired from the lineup.
The Touch Bar is managed by the iBridge T1 or T2 coprocessor, or in the case of the MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020), the main M1 SoC.
