iDevice is an informal term used by some to refer to iOS devices. It was most prominently used following the introduction of the iPod touch, as the operating system did not yet have an official name. With the announcement of the SDK in 2008, Apple began using the name "iPhone OS", despite the same operating system also being used on iPod touch.
Following the release of the iPad, the "iOS" name was introduced, allowing all devices running this operating system to be collectively referred to as "iOS devices".
