There are four major iterations of the iPod shuffle.
iPod shuffle
The first generation iPod shuffle is unique in its form factor, having a built-in USB 2.0 port, additionally used for accessories. It makes use of a SigmaTel processor, not used by any other iPod. It also does not run iPod Software, being the only non-iOS iPod not to run iPod Software.

iPod shuffle (3rd generation)
The iPod shuffle (3rd generation) returns to a tall form factor much like the first generation iPod shuffle. It retains the USB port exposed via 3.5mm headphone connector from its predecessor, rather than using a built-in USB port, in addition to retaining the clip. This model is notable for removing all buttons, depending entirely on remote controls on headphones. Song information is read out by VoiceOver text-to-speech, pre-generated by iTunes while syncing the device.
