There are four major iterations of the iPod shuffle.

iPod shuffle

The first generation iPod shuffle is unique in its form factor, having a built-in USB 2.0 port, additionally used for accessories. It makes use of a SigmaTel processor, not used by any other iPod.

iPod shuffle (2nd generation)

The iPod shuffle (2nd generation) abandons the "USB stick" design, switching to a rectangular design with a belt clip, and an aluminium finish. The device exposes a USB port via the 3.5mm headphone connector. It is not to be confused with the iPod Radio Remote, an iPod accessory with very similar design, in white plastic.

iPod shuffle (3rd generation)

The iPod shuffle (3rd generation) returns to a tall form factor much like the first generation iPod shuffle. It retains the USB port exposed via 3.5mm headphone connector from its predecessor, rather than using a built-in USB port, in addition to retaining the clip. This model is notable for removing all buttons, depending entirely on remote controls on headphones. Song information is read out by VoiceOver text-to-speech, pre-generated by iTunes while syncing the device.

iPod shuffle (4th generation)

The iPod shuffle (4th generation) again changes the form factor of the product, returning to the 2nd generation design, in a square form factor. It undoes the removal of controls from the 3rd generation. VoiceOver functionality was retained from its predecessor. The 4th generation product remained on sale until being discontinued on 27 July 2017.
